My Makeup Journey

February 4, 2018

I have always enjoyed playing with makeup.  I remember at 13 years old I attended a First Aid course with the Girl Guides. Part of the course involved learning to bandage different wounds, they had set up various accident scenes with, special effects makeup injuries to bandage. I was so fascinated with the FX makeup, and so excited when I realized you could do makeup as a job! And so my journey began! I would make my own makeup, skincare and hair products/concoctions, with the help of my Mother and Grandmother. I went on to train in skin care and body treatments. I worked as an Esthetician at spas in London, and then on cruise ships traveling from the US around the Caribbean. On returning from my working travels I applied to one of the top Makeup schools in Europe, The London College of Fashion, for their two year Higher National Diploma, in Theater Studies, Specialist Makeup. This course was extremely hard to get into as they had hundreds of applicants and only 40 places. I was fortunate to be accepted. We studied a wide variety of subjects, including TV, Film, Photographic, Editorial, Special FX Makeup. Prosthetics, Cosmetic chemistry, Wig dressing, making and repair, Period hair dressing/ styling. Historical studies in makeup, hair and costume. Makeup Design. Art.

After graduating, I was offered a position at the London College of Fashion, but I was so eager to be out on set working I decided to go freelance. My first makeup job was as Makeup Designer on a low budget science fiction tv pilot. I had the chance to use several of my skills on this. I created aliens and did some fun special FX as well as the general makeup for the cast. I was so happy to be using my training on set, I felt right at home. I went on to do some work for ITV studios in London. I also worked with photographers for editorial/fashion shoots. I designed some Theater productions. Worked on feature films as assistant and designer. I then got into the field of live tv working for the Walt Disney Company, 'Studio Disney' which was Disney Channel UK's daily live 'magazine type' show. I had six artists to makeup and any of the guests, singers, bands we had coming onto the show. I was offered the position for Head Makeup Artist for Studio Disney and I held that position for 6 years. We had a yearly Disney Channel awards show in London. I was Makeup designer and stylist for the Disney Channel presenters/hosts. I also did work for BBC show, Smile. GMTV Diggin it. Various tv dramas and for 'It's a Mystery'  tv show.

In 2009 I moved, with my US born husband and my wonderful daughter, to the USA and we now live in the beautiful town of Louisville, Colorado, which I love, I'ts a great place for families.

Some of the work I have done in the US included's working on some amazing photo shoots, editorial, fashion, bridal. Commercials for Under Armour, Fed Ex, Subaru. Tv The Profit, CBS News. One of my favorite things to work on now is weddings. I enjoy working with brides, enhancing their natural beauty to look and feel amazing for their big day.

No two days are ever the same as a freelance Makeup artist, I look forward to the experiences and adventures tomorrow will bring!
